Our team at the UAntwerp NEUROday 2025

Meet the team

Below you’ll find the people who make the work happen—postdocs, PhD researchers, data scientists, research technicians, and students. We’re a multidisciplinary group of genetic epidemiologists, bioinformaticians, clinician-scientists, and molecular biologists working shoulder-to-shoulder to understand Alzheimer’s risk and resilience.

More about Kristel Sleegers

Kristel Sleegers has a background in medicine and 20 years of experience in genetic epidemiology and biostatistics. Her work revolves around increasing insight in the complex genetics of Alzheimer’s disease and investigating the translational potential of genetic discovery. She introduced this expertise to the UAntwerp-VIB Center for Molecular Neurology in 2004 when she joined the research group of Prof. Dr. Christine Van Broeckhoven as a visiting postdoc, and extended this line of research during a postdoctoral fellowship of the Research Foundation Flanders.

In 2007, Sleegers became Staff Scientist and Team Leader for complex genetic Alzheimer research at VIB CMN. In 2017, she received tenure as full-time Associate Professor Genetic Neuroepidemiology, and in January 2020, was appointed as Full Professor. At the VIB CMN, she leads the lab of complex genetics of Alzheimer's disease.
